Optimal Diving Seasons
Peak Seasons
The best months to dive in the Similan Islands are from November to April. During this period, the weather is calm, the sea conditions are at their best, and the visibility can reach up to 30 meters. Specifically, the months of December, January, and February are considered the ultimate peak season due to the optimal combination of clear skies, warm water temperatures, and abundant marine life.
Off-Peak Seasons
Diving in the Similan Islands during the off-peak seasons, typically from May to October, presents a different set of challenges and benefits. The primary advantage is the reduced number of divers, which means less crowded dive sites. However, this period also coincides with the monsoon season, bringing stronger currents and reduced visibility. Divers should be aware of potential rough sea conditions and the possibility of dive site closures due to safety concerns.
Month-by-Month Guide
January to March
During these months, the Similan Islands offer exceptional diving conditions. January and February see calm seas and excellent visibility, often exceeding 30 meters. The weather is generally dry, with occasional cool breezes that make diving particularly comfortable. March begins to usher in warmer temperatures, signalling the start of the high season for marine life. Expect to see manta rays and whale sharks during these months.
April to June
April is one of the warmest months but remains an excellent time for diving, with water temperatures peaking and visibility still great. As we move into May and June, conditions start to change. The weather becomes more unpredictable with the onset of the southwest monsoon; however, these months see fewer tourists, offering a more serene diving experience. Visibility can decrease, and brief, heavy rain showers are common.
July to September
July through September is the wettest period in the Similan Islands due to the monsoon season. Diving conditions during these months are less favorable, characterized by reduced visibility and stronger currents. Most dive operators usually close their operations, and the National Park often restricts access to protect the marine environment and ensure diver safety.
October to December
October marks the end of the monsoon season, and diving conditions gradually improve. By November, the weather stabilizes, and the visibility begins to enhance, making it a transitional period with fewer divers. December is the start of the peak diving season, boasting consistent conditions with high visibility, calm waters, and abundant marine life. It’s an ideal time for divers aiming for optimal conditions and a chance to see a diverse range of marine species.
Diving Conditions
Water Temperature
The water temperature in the Similan Islands generally ranges from 27°C to 30°C (81°F to 86°F) throughout the year. During the dry season (November to April), the water tends to be a bit cooler, averaging around 27°C to 28°C (81°F to 82°F). As the rainy season approaches from May to October, the temperature can rise slightly, hitting the higher end of the spectrum around 29°C to 30°C (84°F to 86°F).
Visibility
Visibility in the Similan Islands can be spectacular, often ranging between 20 to 30 meters (65 to 100 feet). The dry season provides the best visibility, averaging around 25 to 30 meters (82 to 100 feet). During the rainy season, visibility can drop to around 15 to 20 meters (50 to 65 feet) due to increased plankton and sediment runoff.
Currents and Tides
Currents in the Similan Islands are generally mild but can vary from site to site. The dry season experiences moderate currents, making it ideal for most divers. However, during certain times, especially new and full moons, the currents can become stronger. The rainy season sees slightly unpredictable current patterns, often dictated by the passing storms and monsoon conditions. It’s best to time your dives with the local tide schedules, with slack tides offering the calmest conditions for diving.
Recap
Summarizing the ideal periods for diving in the Similan Islands, the best time to experience optimal conditions is typically from October to May. During these months, divers can take advantage of excellent underwater visibility, favorable currents, and an abundance of diverse marine life. The peak months of December to February offer particularly good conditions, while the shoulder seasons of October-November and April-May also provide exceptional diving experiences with fewer crowds. Off-peak months like June to September, although less ideal, still present unique underwater encounters for those willing to brave more challenging conditions.
